In 1927, the commissioned route connected the Canadian border to Wells, Nevada. US 93 was subsequently extended to Glendale, Nevada in 1932, to Kingman, Arizona in 1936, to Congress Junction, Arizona in 1965, and to Wickenburg in 1992. Proposed extensions to Phoenix, Arizona (in 1936 & 37) and Nogales, Arizona (in 1958 & 1965) did not come to fruition.

Over the years a number of realignments have occurred. In 1966, a portion of US 93 was rerouted from Glendale to North Las Vegas. In 1977, an alternate route between Challis, Idaho and Shoshone, Idaho became Idaho 75. In 1978, an alternate route between Wells and Lages Station via West Wendover was signed as US 93A. In 2010, traffic was rerouted from Hoover Dam to the Mike O'Callaghan - Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge.

In 1953, British Columbia assigned 93 to the highway connecting US 93 with the Crowsnest Highway at Elko. Before the end of the decade, a number of highways were resigned and 93 continued to Jasper, Alberta via the Banff-Windemere Parkway and the Icefields Parkway.
